The Placeholder Image Generator makes a sized dummy image with its dimensions written on it, in colours you choose. Because it is generated locally rather than fetched from a placeholder service, it works offline, adds no third-party request, and cannot break when somebody else's free tier changes.
Placeholder images exist so a layout can be built before the real pictures are ready, and the useful thing about them is that they say what size they are.
Set the dimensions, the colours and the label, and take the result as a file or as a data URI to paste straight into markup. Because it is generated locally rather than fetched from a placeholder service, it keeps working offline, does not slow a page down with a third-party request, and cannot break when somebody else's free tier changes. A row of preset sizes covers the ones that come up most.
Generated in your browser, so the page stays fast, works offline and does not depend on anyone else's uptime.
The size is written on it by default, which is the whole point of a placeholder in a layout.
Copy it straight into markup with no separate file — the Base64 overhead is nothing at this size.
Social cards, hero banners and thumbnails, so the placeholder matches what will replace it.
Several sizes at once as a ZIP, rather than repeating the same settings by hand.
Type dimensions, or pick a preset such as a social card or a hero banner.
Background and text, with a diagonal-stripe option that reads unmistakably as a placeholder.
The dimensions are shown by default; type anything else if you prefer.
Take a PNG, or copy a data URI to paste directly into your markup.
A third-party request slows the page, breaks offline, and depends on somebody else's uptime and free tier. A generated file has none of those problems.
The exact size the real image will be, so the layout does not shift when you swap it in. Presets cover the common social, hero and thumbnail sizes.
Pasting the placeholder directly into an img tag or CSS with no separate file. For something this small the Base64 overhead is negligible.
Add the sizes you need to the batch list and they are produced together as a ZIP, which saves repeating the same settings.
