BMI misclassifies muscular people as overweight and misses normal-weight people carrying high visceral fat. Waist-to-height ratio — keeping your waist under half your height — catches the second group and is increasingly favoured in guidance. Looking at all three together is more honest than trusting any one.

Quick Tool Overview

The Overweight Calculator tells you whether you are above a healthy weight and by how many kilos or pounds, using three independent measures — BMI, waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio — because they frequently disagree, and the disagreement is informative.

About the Overweight Calculator

Work out whether you are above a healthy weight and by how much, in kilograms or pounds rather than in an abstract index. Three independent measures are applied — BMI, waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio — because they do not always agree.

That disagreement is the point. BMI misclassifies muscular people as overweight and misses people of normal weight who carry a large amount of visceral fat. Waist-to-height ratio, where the target is simply to keep your waist under half your height, catches the second group and is increasingly favoured in guidance for exactly that reason. Seeing all three at once gives a far more honest picture than any single number, and the calculator shows the weight change that would bring each into range.

Key features of the Overweight Calculator

Three measures, not one

BMI, waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio each have their own threshold and are reported separately.

Excess shown in real units

The gap to a healthy range is given in kilograms or pounds rather than as an index number.

Catches what BMI misses

Waist-to-height ratio identifies normal-weight people carrying high visceral fat, which BMI classes as healthy.

Ethnicity-adjusted thresholds

The lower cut-offs recommended for people of South Asian descent are included rather than ignored.

A realistic timeline

Loss at 0.5 to 1 percent of body weight per week is translated into weeks, so the goal has a date on it.

How to use the Overweight Calculator

  1. 1

    Enter height and weight

The BMI-based excess is calculated immediately.

  2. 2

    Add your waist measurement

Measured at the navel. This switches on the two waist-based assessments.

  3. 3

    Compare the three verdicts

BMI, waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio, each with its own threshold.

  4. 4

    Read the gap

How much weight would bring you into the healthy range, and a realistic timeline for losing it.

Frequently asked questions

A BMI of 25 or above is classified as overweight and 30 or above as obese. Thresholds are lower for people of South Asian descent, at about 23 and 27.5.
