About the Number Extractor

Getting the figures out of a document — an invoice pasted as text, a report, a set of log lines, a table copied without its structure — is a job that keeps recurring and has no obvious home outside a spreadsheet.

This pulls out every number, in the forms they are actually written: decimals, negatives, thousands separators, currency amounts, percentages and numbers in scientific notation. They are listed in order with a running total, a sum, an average and a range, which is usually the whole reason for extracting them. Values can also be filtered to a range, which is how you pull the amounts over a threshold out of a long document.

Key features of the Number Extractor

Real number formats

Decimals, negatives, thousands separators, currency amounts, percentages and scientific notation.

Totals calculated

Sum, average, minimum and maximum, which is what you were going to do in a spreadsheet anyway.

Range filtering

Show only values above or below a threshold, to pull the large amounts out of a long document.

Currency symbols reported

Kept alongside each value so you can see which currency it is, without breaking the arithmetic.

Standalone numbers only

The 2 in "H2O" is excluded by default, since it is a digit rather than a figure you wanted.

How to use the Number Extractor

  1. 1

    Paste your text

An invoice, a report, a log or a pasted table.

  2. 2

Set what counts as a number

Decimals, negatives, thousands separators, currency and percentages are each recognised.

  3. 3

Filter by range if you need to

Show only values above or below a threshold.

  4. 4

    Read the totals

Sum, average, minimum and maximum are calculated for everything extracted.

Frequently asked questions

A comma between digit groups is treated as a separator, so 1,250.75 is read as one number rather than two. It is a switch, because in some European formats the comma is the decimal point instead.
