Finance Calculator

Solve for any of PV, FV, payment, rate or number of periods.

Signs matter.

Money leaving your pocket is negative, money coming in is positive. A loan is positive PV and negative PMT; a savings plan is negative PV and negative PMT with a positive FV. Getting the signs consistent is what lets one equation describe both.

About the Finance Calculator

This is the general-purpose time value of money solver that specialised calculators are built on. Five variables describe almost any financial arrangement: present value, future value, periodic payment, interest rate and number of periods. Give it any four and it finds the fifth.

That single capability covers an enormous amount of ground. Solve for payment and you have a loan calculator. Solve for future value and you have a savings projection. Solve for rate and you have found the return an investment delivered, or the true interest rate hidden in a financing offer. Solve for periods and you know how long a goal takes. The sign convention matters: money you pay out is negative and money you receive is positive, which is what lets one equation describe both borrowing and saving.

Key features of the Finance Calculator

Five variables, any unknown

One solver replaces a loan calculator, a savings projection, a rate finder and a term calculator.

Rate solved by iteration

The equation cannot be rearranged for rate when payments exist, so it is converged on numerically.

Begin and end mode

Payments at the start or end of each period, which is worth exactly one period of interest.

Sign convention handled

Money out is negative and money in is positive, which is what lets one equation cover borrowing and saving alike.

Any compounding frequency

Periods per year is an input, so annual, monthly, quarterly and daily all work.

Frequently asked questions

The principle that money available now is worth more than the same amount later, because it can be invested. Every calculation here is an application of it, moving amounts forwards or backwards in time at a given rate.
