The Compound Growth Calculator works out CAGR — the single yearly rate that would take a starting value to an ending value over a given period. It also projects a value forward at a chosen rate and solves for the years needed to reach a target.
Compound annual growth rate is the single yearly rate that would take a starting value to an ending value over a given period. Enter the beginning value, the ending value and the number of years to get it, expressed as a clean annual percentage.
CAGR is the fair way to compare things that grew unevenly, which is nearly everything. Revenue that jumps 60 percent one year and falls 20 percent the next has not grown at 20 percent a year, and the arithmetic mean of the annual changes overstates it every time. The same panel projects a value forward at a chosen rate, and solves for the number of years needed to reach a target, which covers the three questions people ask of a growth rate.
Revenue that jumps 60 percent one year and falls 20 percent the next has not grown at 20 percent a year.
The arithmetic mean of annual changes overstates growth every time; CAGR does not.
Find the rate, project a value forward, or solve for the number of years to reach a target.
Years, quarters or months — the compounding follows the period you choose.
The rate is expressed as a plain annual percentage, ready for a report or a board slide.
Type the beginning value and the value at the end of the period.
Usually years, but any consistent period works as long as you read the answer in the same unit.
Use the other panels to project a future value at a rate, or to find the time needed to reach a target.
CAGR equals the ending value divided by the beginning value, raised to the power of one divided by the number of years, minus one. Multiply by 100 for a percentage.
Because growth compounds. Averaging the yearly percentages overstates the real rate whenever the numbers vary — the more volatile the series, the larger the overstatement.
All the volatility. It describes a smooth path that almost certainly did not happen, so a steady business and a wildly erratic one can report identical CAGRs over the same period.
Use the rule of 72 for a quick estimate: divide 72 by the growth rate. At 8 percent that is about nine years. The solve-for-time panel gives the exact figure.
