About the ChatGPT Export to Markdown

ChatGPT and Claude both let you export your full history, but what arrives is a large conversations.json file that is hard to read and harder to search. ChatGPT stores each conversation as a tree of message nodes, including every answer you regenerated and abandoned.

Drop the file in, and every conversation is converted to clean Markdown with a title, an optional date and labelled turns. For ChatGPT exports the tool follows the thread you were actually looking at — from the last message back to the start — so abandoned branches and hidden system messages are left out. Claude exports are read too.

Filter chats by title, sort by newest, oldest or name, and rename the speaker labels. Download everything as one Markdown file, or copy and download individual conversations as separate .md files ready for Obsidian, Notion, a Git repository or a folder of notes. Your chat history is personal, so it is read here in the browser and never uploaded.

How to use the ChatGPT Export to Markdown

    Export your data

    In ChatGPT: Settings, Data controls, Export data. In Claude: Settings, Privacy, Export data.

    Unzip the archive and drop the conversations.json file onto the page.

    Search titles, choose the order, and set the names used for each speaker.
