The Character Counter without Spaces counts the characters in your text with every space, tab and line break excluded — the "excluding spaces" figure that universities, journals and many competition briefs specify. Both readings are shown, so you never have to subtract one number from another.
Academic and publishing limits are usually written "excluding spaces", because a space is not something you wrote — it is punctuation between the things you wrote. Journals set abstract limits this way, and so do many universities. This counter reports that figure directly, so you are not doing arithmetic on two numbers from another tool.
Everything the Unicode standard treats as whitespace is excluded: ordinary spaces, tabs, line breaks and the non-breaking spaces that arrive invisibly when you paste out of a web page. Letters, digits, punctuation and emoji all count, since those are characters you chose to put on the page.
Spaces, tabs, line breaks and invisible Unicode spaces such as the non-breaking space are all left out of the total.
Commas, brackets and quotation marks are characters you wrote, so they stay in the figure — which is how academic limits are defined.
The with-spaces count sits beside the headline number, so one tool answers both versions of the question.
Enter the cap from your brief and the tool shows the remaining allowance and turns red once you pass it.
Unpublished research and graded work are counted in your own browser and never sent anywhere.
Drop in the abstract, essay or answer you need to measure.
The headline number excludes spaces, tabs and line breaks entirely.
The second figure includes whitespace, so you can see both readings without switching tools.
Enter the limit from your brief and the remaining allowance is worked out for you.
Ordinary spaces, tab characters, line breaks, carriage returns and the Unicode whitespace characters such as the non-breaking space (U+00A0) and the narrow no-break space. All of them are excluded from the headline figure.
Yes. Commas, full stops, brackets and quotation marks are characters you typed, so they are included. Only whitespace is removed from the total.
The usual cause is a non-breaking space picked up from a web page. Word counts some of these as characters where this tool treats every Unicode whitespace character as a space and excludes it.
A simple emoji counts as one. Emoji built from several code points — a flag, or a person with a skin tone modifier — are counted as the single visible character you see, which is what a reader would call it.
