The working
Total with tax
—
The Sales Tax Calculator adds tax to a price or strips it back out of a tax-inclusive total, combining state, county and city rates. The reverse calculation is the one people get wrong, because removing eight percent means dividing by 1.08, not subtracting eight percent.
Enter a price and a tax rate to get the tax amount and the total. Switch the mode and it works backwards instead, taking a tax-inclusive total and separating out the pre-tax price and the tax within it, which is the calculation people get wrong most often.
The reverse calculation is not simply subtracting the percentage. To remove eight percent tax from a total you divide by 1.08 rather than multiplying by 0.92, and those give different answers. The calculator also lets you enter state and local rates separately and combines them, since in most of the United States the rate that actually applies is the sum of several jurisdictions and the combined figure is rarely the one advertised.
Removing tax means dividing by one plus the rate — subtracting the percentage gives a different and wrong answer.
State, county and city rates entered separately and added, since the combined figure is what actually applies.
The tax amount as its own line, which is what expense claims and bookkeeping need.
Not limited to a preset list, so it handles special district rates and non-US rates alike.
Change any field and every figure updates, with no submit step.
Add tax to a pre-tax price, or remove tax from a total that already includes it.
The price before tax, or the tax-inclusive total, depending on the mode.
A single combined rate, or separate state, county and city rates that are added together.
The pre-tax price, the tax amount and the total are shown separately.
Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate as a decimal to get the tax, then add it to the price. A hundred dollar item at eight percent carries eight dollars of tax and totals a hundred and eight.
Divide the total by one plus the rate. To strip eight percent from a hundred and eight, divide by 1.08 to get a hundred. Subtracting eight percent instead gives the wrong answer.
Most states allow counties, cities and special districts to add their own rates on top of the state rate. The combined rate can vary between neighbouring towns, so the local figure is the one that matters.
No. Sales tax is charged once at the final sale and usually excluded from the shelf price. VAT is collected at every stage of production and is normally included in displayed prices in countries that use it.
