The RAL Classic chart, searchable, with screen approximations.
The colours appear here
The RAL Color Chart lists the RAL Classic range with screen approximations, grouped by family and searchable, plus a nearest-RAL finder that matches a hex code with CIEDE2000 rather than by RGB distance.
RAL Classic is the colour standard European paint, powder coating and industrial finishing work is specified in. Every colour has a four-digit number grouped by family — 1000s yellow, 3000s red, 5000s blue, 7000s grey — and a name, and this chart lists all of them with screen approximations and a search.
The important caveat is in the word approximation. RAL is a physical standard defined by printed reference panels, not by screen values, so no hex code reproduces it exactly — a colour also looks different in gloss and matt finishes of the same number. The values here are the conventional sRGB approximations the trade uses on screen, which are close enough to choose from and not close enough to sign off from.
The nearest-RAL finder is the other half of the tool: paste a hex code from a brand guide and it tells you which RAL number is closest, matched with CIEDE2000 rather than by RGB distance, with the ΔE so you can judge whether the match is good enough to order paint against.
Paste a brand hex code and get the closest RAL numbers, matched the way the trade measures colour difference.
How good the match really is — under 2 is commercially acceptable, above 3 is visibly different.
The 1000s yellow through the 9000s white and black, which is how RAL itself is organised.
RAL is a physical standard; these are the conventional sRGB approximations, close enough to choose from and not to approve from.
By number or by name, since people arrive with one or the other.
By RAL number, by name, or by colour family.
Any hex code, and the nearest RAL numbers are found for you.
How close the match really is, in the units the trade uses.
The RAL number for the order, the hex for the mockup.
No, and they cannot be. RAL is defined by physical reference panels, and a screen cannot reproduce them exactly — gloss and matt versions of the same number even look different from each other. Use the numbers to order and a physical fan deck to approve.
The first digit is the colour family: 1 yellow, 2 orange, 3 red, 4 violet, 5 blue, 6 green, 7 grey, 8 brown, 9 white and black. The remaining three are sequential within the family rather than meaningful.
Classic is the original set of around 215 colours with four-digit numbers, and it is what most industrial specifications use. RAL Design is a much larger systematic set based on hue, lightness and chroma, numbered differently.
For a visual match on a finished product, ΔE under 2 is generally considered acceptable and under 1 is effectively invisible. Above 3 the difference will be obvious when the two are side by side.
