The News Sitemap Generator builds a Google News sitemap with the news namespace, publication name, language and ISO 8601 publication dates. It applies the rules this format has and others do not: a 48-hour window on every article and a 1,000 URL cap, both enforced as you type rather than discovered in Search Console later.
List your articles with their publication dates and the generator writes the Google News sitemap, complete with the news namespace, the publication name and language, and the ISO 8601 dates the format demands.
A news sitemap follows rules no other sitemap does, and they are strict. It may only contain articles published in the last 48 hours — older entries must be removed, not left to age out. It is capped at 1,000 URLs rather than 50,000. Every article needs a publication date with a timezone, the publication name exactly as it is registered in Publisher Center, and the language as an ISO 639 code. The tool applies the 48-hour window as you build, greying out anything too old, because a news sitemap containing week-old articles is a common reason for a site to stop being crawled as frequently as it was.
Articles older than two days do not belong in a news sitemap, and they are flagged as you add them.
The news limit is far lower than an ordinary sitemap's, and it is enforced.
Publication dates are written in full ISO 8601 with an offset, which the format requires.
Name and language are written into every entry in the structure Google expects.
The page explains why this file has to be regenerated on a schedule rather than maintained by hand.
The name exactly as registered in Google Publisher Center, plus the language code.
One per line as "URL | Headline | 2026-03-14T09:00", newest first.
Anything older is flagged, because it must not be in a news sitemap at all.
Publish the XML, then generate it on a schedule — this file has to keep moving.
Two days. Google will only read articles published in the last 48 hours, and entries older than that should be removed rather than left in. A news sitemap is a rolling window, not an archive, which is why it usually has to be generated automatically.
A thousand, far fewer than the 50,000 an ordinary sitemap allows. If you publish more than that in two days, split across several news sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index.
Yes, in practice. A news sitemap is read for sites that appear in Google News, which means being set up in Publisher Center. On a site outside Google News the file is valid and simply unused.
Yes. The news sitemap handles the 48-hour news surface; the regular sitemap handles ordinary web search, where the article stays relevant long after it drops out of the news window.
