MAC Address Generator

Generate MAC addresses that are correctly marked as locally administered.

Quick Tool Overview

The MAC Address Generator sets the two low bits of the first byte correctly — locally administered and unicast — which is what guarantees a generated address cannot collide with a manufacturer-assigned one anywhere.

About the MAC Address Generator

Generates MAC addresses in whichever notation you need, with the bits that carry meaning set correctly. The two low bits of the first byte are not decoration: one marks an address as multicast, and the other marks it as locally administered rather than assigned.

A generated address should have the locally-administered bit set and the multicast bit clear, which is what guarantees it cannot collide with a manufacturer-assigned address anywhere in the world. That is done by default here. There is also an option to fix the first three bytes to a specific OUI, for when you need an address that looks like it came from a particular vendor for a test.

Key features of the MAC Address Generator

Locally administered by default

Setting that bit is what makes a generated address safe — it can never match one assigned by a manufacturer.

Unicast guaranteed

The multicast bit is cleared, because an address with it set is not valid for a network interface.

Five notations

Colons, hyphens, Cisco dots, bare hex and spaces, in upper or lower case.

OUI pinning

Fix the first three bytes so an address looks like it came from a particular vendor, for a test that checks the manufacturer.

Explains the bits

What each low bit means and why it matters, so the addresses are not just random hex.

How to use the MAC Address Generator

  1. 1

    Set the count

One address, or a batch for a test fixture.

  2. 2

    Choose a format

Colons, hyphens, Cisco dots, no separator or spaces.

  3. 3

    Decide on the bits

Locally administered by default, which is what prevents a collision.

  4. 4

    Fix an OUI if needed

Pin the first three bytes to make an address look like a given vendor.

Frequently asked questions

That the address was assigned by whoever runs the network rather than burned in by a manufacturer. The second-lowest bit of the first byte marks it, and setting it is what guarantees no collision with a real device.
