The Image Tiler repeats a picture into a pattern and deals with the seam that normally gives tiling away. Mirroring alternate tiles is seamless by construction and works with any source; edge blending wraps and cross-fades the borders instead, which keeps the pattern's direction. Take the finished sheet, or the single tile for CSS repeat.
Tiling turns one small image into a background of any size. The catch is the seam: unless the edges match, the repeat is visible as a grid and the illusion collapses.
Two treatments deal with that here. Mirroring flips alternate tiles so every edge meets its own reflection, which is seamless by construction and works with any source image. Edge blending wraps and cross-fades the borders instead, which preserves the direction of the pattern and suits textures like fabric, stone and paper. Set the grid, pick a treatment, and the result can be taken either as a finished large image or as a single seamless tile to repeat in CSS.
Alternate tiles are flipped so every edge meets its own reflection, which removes the seam without touching the source pixels.
Wraps and cross-fades the borders to make a genuinely seamless tile that keeps the pattern running in one direction.
Download one small seamless tile for background-repeat, or the whole assembled image when you need a single file.
Say how many tiles across, or say how big the result should be and let the count follow.
The repeat is drawn as you adjust, so a visible seam is obvious before you download anything.
Textures and small graphics tile best; photographs of scenes rarely do.
Set how many tiles across and down, or give an output size and let the count follow.
Mirror alternate tiles, or blend the edges — mirroring is the more reliable of the two.
Download the full tiled image, or just the one seamless tile for CSS repeat.
Its left edge has to continue into its right edge, and its top into its bottom. Mirroring alternate tiles guarantees that for any image; edge blending achieves it by wrapping and cross-fading the borders.
Take the single tile if you are going to repeat it in CSS with background-repeat, since the browser does the tiling and the file stays tiny. Take the sheet if you need one finished image.
Photographs of scenes have a clear top and bottom and strong large-scale structure, which repeats obviously. Close-up textures — fabric, concrete, foliage, paper — tile far better.
Yes, and visibly so on anything with a direction, such as text or a diagonal weave. On an unstructured texture it is invisible, which is why it is the default.
