Quick Tool Overview

The Flexbox Generator puts every container and item property on a control with a live preview that labels both axes — so the moment flex-direction swaps which property controls which direction is visible rather than surprising.

About the Flexbox Generator

Flexbox has a small number of properties and a large number of ways to get them confused. This puts every container property on a control with a live preview, so you can see what justify-content does rather than remembering it.

The part that unsticks most people is the relationship between the axes. justify-content works along the main axis and align-items across the cross axis, and swapping flex-direction to column swaps which is which — so the property that was controlling horizontal position is suddenly controlling vertical. The preview labels both axes and updates their direction with the setting, which makes that swap visible instead of surprising. Item properties are editable per box too.

Key features of the Flexbox Generator

Both axes labelled

The preview names the main and cross axis and redraws them when direction changes, which is the thing that unsticks most people.

Per-item control

flex-grow, flex-shrink, flex-basis, align-self and order on individual boxes, not just the container.

Defaults omitted

The generated CSS contains only what you changed, so it is short enough to actually read.

Every property explained

What each one does, in a line, where you are changing it.

The min-width trap noted

A flex item will not shrink below its content unless min-width is zero — the commonest flexbox bug, called out where it applies.

Frequently asked questions

justify-content positions items along the main axis and align-items across the cross axis. With flex-direction: row the main axis is horizontal; switch to column and they swap, which is the single most common source of confusion.
