Embedding Cost Calculator
Estimate the cost and vector storage of embedding a document corpus for RAG.
Write both custom instruction boxes, each checked against the 1,500 character limit.
What ChatGPT should know about you
How ChatGPT should respond
The ChatGPT Custom Instructions Generator writes both personalization boxes — what ChatGPT should know about you and how it should respond — from a few choices, with a live counter keeping each box under the 1,500 character limit.
Custom instructions are the two boxes in ChatGPT settings that apply to every new chat: what ChatGPT should know about you, and how you want it to respond. Filled in well, they remove the preamble, the over-explaining and the constant reformatting. Left empty, every chat starts from a generic reader.
This generator writes both boxes from a few choices — your role, the tools you work with, what you are working on and how much to assume you know, then length, tone, formatting, code style and the habits you want gone. The wording is written to be enforceable: instructions about form rather than virtues, which is what a model can actually follow.
Each box has a live counter against the 1,500 character limit ChatGPT enforces, so nothing is cut off when you save. Presets for developers, marketers, students and founders give you a strong draft in one click. The same text works in the personal preferences setting in Claude.
About you and how to respond are generated separately, each with its own copy button.
A bar for each box turns amber near the limit and red once over it.
Instructions describe form — answer first, no bolded labels — which models can actually follow.
Developer, marketer, student and founder profiles give a strong first draft.
The same text fits the personal preferences setting in Claude.
Presets fill every field with a realistic profile you can edit.
Your role, your tools, your current work and how much to assume you already know.
Length, tone, formatting, code style, and anything it should never do.
Settings, Personalization, Custom instructions. Both counters must be under 1,500.
On the web, open Settings, then Personalization, then Custom instructions. On mobile, tap your name and look under Personalization.
1,500 characters per box. ChatGPT will not save a box that is longer, which is why each box here has its own counter.
No. They apply to chats started after you save them. Existing conversations keep the instructions they began with.
Instructions about form, such as "answer first, then explain" or "no bullet lists unless order matters". Asking the model to be accurate or helpful changes nothing, because it is already trying to be.
Yes. Claude has a personal preferences setting that accepts the same kind of instructions.
