AWG and SWG to mm², diameter, circular mils and resistance per length.
The Wire Gauge Converter translates between AWG, SWG, square millimetres, diameter and kcmil, and gives resistance per kilometre and per thousand feet for copper or aluminium conductors.
Wire is sized by gauge in North America, by cross-sectional area in square millimetres almost everywhere else, and by the older British Standard Wire Gauge on a lot of existing equipment. The three systems do not line up, which makes matching a cable from one standard to another genuinely awkward.
Start from an AWG number (including 4/0), an SWG number, a cross-section in mm², a diameter in millimetres or inches, or an area in kcmil. The converter gives the area, diameter, circular mils and resistance per kilometre and per thousand feet for copper or aluminium, plus the nearest AWG, the nearest SWG and the next standard metric size up. Add a run length to get the resistance of that length of wire.
AWG, the British Standard Wire Gauge and metric mm² sizes are all accepted and cross-referenced.
Any size is matched to the nearest AWG, the nearest SWG and the next IEC metric cable size up.
Ohms per kilometre and per 1,000 feet for copper or aluminium, and for your own run length.
Large aught sizes can be typed either way.
AWG 4/0 to 40 is tabled with diameter, area and resistance, your size highlighted.
An AWG or SWG gauge, a cross-section in mm², a diameter or an area in kcmil.
Gauges accept forms like 12, 1/0 or 0000; sizes accept decimals.
Copper or aluminium changes the resistance figures.
See the nearest gauge in each system and the full AWG table, with resistance for your run length if given.
About 3.31 mm², with a diameter of 2.05 mm. The nearest standard metric cable is 4 mm²; 2.5 mm² is slightly smaller than 12 AWG.
The gauge counts drawing steps: each pass through a smaller die made the wire thinner, so a higher number is a wire that has been drawn more times.
No. SWG, the British Standard Wire Gauge, uses a different table, so an 18 SWG wire (1.22 mm) is thicker than an 18 AWG wire (1.02 mm).
Not safely. The current a cable can carry depends on insulation, installation method, grouping and temperature, so always size it from your local wiring regulations.
