Converted on your device — the video is never uploaded
The MKV to MP4 Converter re-encodes the first video and audio track of a Matroska file to H.264 and AAC, and says plainly what MP4 cannot carry across.
MKV is the container of choice for high-quality video: it holds several audio tracks, subtitles, chapters and almost any codec. That flexibility is exactly why phones, smart TVs, consoles and editing software so often refuse it.
The conversion runs in your browser through ffmpeg.wasm — the real ffmpeg, compiled to WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded: a wedding video, a client recording or an unreleased track never leaves your machine. The engine is a one-off download of about 32 MB, after which your browser caches it and every later conversion starts immediately.
The first video and audio tracks are converted to H.264 and AAC in an MP4 with faststart metadata. Extra audio tracks, subtitles and chapters are left behind, because MP4 has nowhere to put them — the page says so rather than quietly dropping half your file. Choose the quality and speed, scale down, change the frame rate, trim, or remove the audio.
Extra audio tracks, subtitles and chapters are reported, not hidden.
Choose the trade-off between size and picture.
Scaling down speeds the encode up a great deal.
Give a start time and a length to take just the part you need.
ffmpeg runs inside the browser tab, so the file never leaves your computer.
Any Matroska file, any size.
Scaling to 1080p or 720p speeds things up a great deal.
A start time and a length.
An MP4 for the TV or the phone.
They are not carried over. MP4 subtitle support is limited and inconsistent; extract them separately with a subtitle tool if you need them.
Only the first is kept. MKV commonly holds several languages; MP4 in practice carries one.
Because the video is genuinely being re-encoded, frame by frame, in a browser tab. A desktop tool with hardware acceleration is faster — but it does not keep the file off other people’s servers.
No. Everything happens in the tab, which is the point: large video files are exactly what you do not want to hand to an unknown server.
