The JPG to GIF Converter turns a photo into a GIF, quantising a palette from the image itself and telling you honestly what the format costs in colour and file size.
Some places still take nothing but GIF: an old forum, a legacy CMS, a piece of software written before WebP existed. Converting a photograph to it means squeezing millions of colours down to 256, and doing that badly leaves skies banded and faces blotchy.
Drop a JPG — or a PNG, WebP or BMP — and the palette is quantised from your own image rather than taken from a fixed table, so the colours that actually matter in this photo are the ones that survive. Choose 256 colours for the best quality or fewer for a smaller file and a deliberately poster-like look, and resize at the same time. The page is honest about the result: it tells you how many colours the original had, and says plainly when the GIF ends up larger than the JPEG you started with, which for a photograph it often does.
Quantised from the actual colours, not a fixed table.
256 for quality, or fewer for a smaller, poster-like result.
The quickest way to make a GIF smaller.
It says when the GIF is bigger than the JPEG you started with.
The encoder is part of the page — no library is fetched.
JPG, PNG, WebP or BMP — all are accepted.
256 for the best quality, fewer for a smaller file.
A smaller GIF is a much smaller file.
Check the preview first — banding shows up there.
Because GIF allows only 256 colours in an image, and a photograph has tens of thousands. Gradients such as skies show the steps. That is a limit of the format itself.
GIF compresses flat areas of colour well and photographic detail badly, while JPEG is built for photographs. For a photo, GIF is almost always larger.
This makes a single-frame GIF from one image. Use the Video to GIF tool for an animation.
A JPEG has no transparency to keep. A PNG with transparency is flattened, since GIF supports only a single fully transparent colour rather than soft edges.
