Bill in yen with no decimal places, 10% consumption tax and a registration number.
The JPY builder works in whole yen throughout, sets consumption tax at 10% with the 8% reduced rate available, carries the qualified invoice registration number a buyer needs for the input credit, and takes full furikomi details.
The yen has no decimal places, which sounds trivial until a template built for dollars produces ¥1,240.00 and a Japanese accounts department has to work out what the fractional yen is. Amounts here are whole yen throughout, rounded once at the end rather than line by line.
Consumption tax is 10%, with a reduced 8% rate for food and drink other than alcohol and dining out, and for newspapers on subscription. Since October 2023 Japan has run the qualified invoice system: a buyer can only claim the input credit if the invoice carries the seller’s registration number, the applicable rates, and the tax amount shown separately for each rate.
Payment is by furikomi, a bank transfer that needs the bank name, branch name, account type, account number and the account holder’s name — conventionally in katakana. The payer usually bears the transfer fee unless the invoice says otherwise, and saying otherwise is worth doing explicitly.
Whole yen everywhere, rounded once on the total.
Reduced rate for food, drink and subscription newspapers.
Without it the buyer cannot claim the input credit.
Each rate with its own base and tax amount, as required.
Bank, branch, account type, number and holder in katakana.
No decimal places anywhere. The builder does this automatically for JPY.
10% standard, 8% reduced for most food and drink and subscription newspapers.
Without it the buyer cannot claim the input credit under the qualified invoice system.
Each rate needs its own taxable base and tax amount.
Bank, branch, account type, number and the holder’s name in katakana.
No. ISO 4217 gives the yen zero minor units, so every amount on a Japanese invoice is a whole number. Rounding should happen once on the total rather than on each line.
Japan’s invoice-based consumption tax credit system, in force since October 2023. Only an invoice from a registered business, carrying its registration number and showing the tax separately for each rate, entitles the buyer to an input credit.
Ten per cent standard. A reduced 8% rate applies to food and beverages other than alcohol and eating out, and to newspapers supplied on subscription twice a week or more.
The bank name, the branch name, the account type (ordinary or current), the account number and the account holder’s name, conventionally written in katakana. Say who bears the transfer fee — by default the payer does.
