Bill in Canadian dollars with GST, HST or PST by province.
The CAD builder handles the part that catches people out — a sales tax rate that follows the customer’s province, not yours — with GST, HST and separate PST or QST, the GST/HST registration number and the three numbers an EFT needs.
Canadian sales tax is the part that catches people out, because the rate depends on the customer’s province rather than yours. Five per cent federal GST applies everywhere; five provinces instead charge a harmonised HST of 13% or 15% that replaces both; British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba add a separate provincial sales tax on top of GST; and Quebec charges QST alongside it.
A registered business must show its GST/HST registration number on any invoice over a small threshold, and the customer cannot claim an input tax credit without it — which makes a missing number the fastest way to have an invoice returned.
Payment is by EFT, which needs a three-digit institution number, a five-digit transit number and the account number, or by Interac e-Transfer for smaller amounts. Dates are commonly written year-month-day in the ISO form, which sidesteps the fact that Canada uses both of the other orders depending on who is reading.
5% GST, 13–15% HST, or GST plus a separate PST or QST.
Without it the customer cannot claim the input tax credit.
In BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba it sits alongside GST.

It follows the place of supply, which for most services is the customer’s province. Five per cent GST applies in Alberta and the territories; HST of 13% or 15% in Ontario and Atlantic Canada; GST plus PST or QST in BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec.
Yes. A registrant must provide it on request and, above a low threshold, on the invoice itself. The customer needs it to claim an input tax credit, so an invoice without it is usually sent back.
When your worldwide taxable revenues exceed the small supplier threshold in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters. Below that registration is voluntary, and often worth it if you have input tax to recover.
For EFT: the institution number, the transit number and the account number. For a wire from abroad: the SWIFT code, the account number and the bank’s address. For smaller amounts, an Interac e-Transfer to an email address is often simplest.
