Break-even point
—
The Break-Even Calculator finds the point where total revenue equals total cost, from your fixed costs, variable cost per unit and selling price. The number doing the work is the contribution margin — selling price minus variable cost — and break-even is simply fixed costs divided by it.
Enter your fixed costs, the variable cost of making one unit and your selling price to find the point where total revenue equals total cost. Below it you are making a loss, above it every additional unit contributes pure profit.
The number doing the work is the contribution margin: selling price minus variable cost, the amount each sale contributes towards fixed costs. Break-even is simply fixed costs divided by that figure. It follows that a small price rise moves break-even far more than a similar cut in fixed costs, because it lifts the contribution on every unit. You can also enter a target profit to see the volume needed to earn it, and a current sales figure to get your margin of safety.
The amount each sale contributes towards fixed costs is shown, since it is the figure the whole calculation rests on.
A small price rise moves break-even far more than a similar cut in fixed costs, because it lifts the contribution on every unit.
Enter the profit you want and get the volume needed to earn it, not just to survive.
Add your current sales figure to see how far above break-even you actually are.
Break-even is reported in both, because one is what you plan against and the other is what you report.
Rent, salaries, software and anything else that does not change with volume, for the period you are analysing.
Materials, packaging, shipping and per-sale fees — the costs that scale with each unit sold.
The contribution margin per unit is worked out from this.
Optional. Enter a profit goal to see the volume required to reach it, not just to break even.
Break-even units equals fixed costs divided by the contribution margin per unit, where contribution margin is the selling price minus the variable cost per unit.
The amount each unit sold contributes towards covering fixed costs, and towards profit once those are covered. It is the selling price minus the variable cost of that unit.
Anything that does not change with the number of units you sell, such as rent, insurance, salaried staff and software subscriptions. Costs that scale with volume are variable.
How far current sales exceed the break-even point, expressed as a percentage. A margin of 30 percent means sales could fall by almost a third before you started making a loss.
