Turn any text into a safe slug, filename, anchor or branch name.
Slugify for Developers transliterates rather than deletes — café becomes cafe, ß becomes ss, R&D becomes r-and-d — and gives the variants you end up needing anyway: a filename, an anchor, a branch name and a constant.
Text in, a safe slug out — plus the variants you actually end up needing: an underscore version for a filename, a heading anchor, a branch name and a constant name, all from the same input.
The transliteration is what separates a usable slug from a mangled one. Accented letters are decomposed and their marks removed, so
café
becomes
cafe
rather than
caf
. Letters that have no decomposition get an explicit mapping —
ß
to
ss
,
ø
to
o
,
æ
to
ae
— because dropping them silently changes the word. And symbols are spelled out with spaces around them, so
R&D
gives
r-and-d
rather than
randd
.
Decomposed and stripped of their marks, so é becomes e rather than disappearing and leaving caf.
ß, ø, æ, đ, ł and þ each have an explicit mapping, because dropping them silently changes the word.
With spaces around them, so R&D gives r-and-d and 100% gives 100-percent — not randd and 100.
A length limit trims to the last separator, so a capped slug never ends mid-word.
The same input as a URL slug, a filename, an anchor, a branch name and a constant.
A title, a heading or a whole list with one per line.
Hyphen for URLs, underscore for filenames, or none at all.
The slug is cut at a word boundary rather than mid-word.
URL, filename, anchor, branch name or constant.
Hyphens. Search engines treat a hyphen as a word separator and an underscore as a word joiner, so my_blog_post reads as one token and my-blog-post reads as three words.
Long enough to say what the page is and no longer — three to six words is typical. Cutting at a word boundary matters more than the exact limit; a slug ending mid-word looks broken.
They are transliterated, not dropped: é becomes e, ü becomes u, ß becomes ss. Letters with no standard decomposition have an explicit mapping, because silently deleting them changes the word.
Only with a 301 redirect from the old one. A slug is part of the URL, so changing it breaks every existing link and any ranking that URL has accumulated.
