Countdown Calculator
A live countdown to any date, ticking down to the second.
Count the hours between a start and end time, breaks deducted.
Payable time
—
Why decimal hours?
Pay is a rate multiplied by hours, which only works in decimal. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45 — a mistake that quietly costs money on timesheets.
The Hours Calculator counts the time between a start and an end time in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, with a break field that subtracts unpaid time. Overnight shifts are handled properly rather than returning a negative duration.
Enter a start time and an end time to get the duration in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. A break field subtracts unpaid time, which is what turns a clock-in and clock-out pair into payable hours.
Overnight shifts are handled properly. If the end time is earlier than the start time the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds a day rather than returning a negative duration, so a 22:00 to 06:00 shift correctly reads as eight hours. Twelve and twenty-four hour input are both accepted, and the decimal output is the format payroll systems expect.
A 22:00 to 06:00 shift correctly reads as eight hours instead of a negative number.
Unpaid time is subtracted, which is what turns clock-in and clock-out into payable hours.
The format payroll systems expect, given alongside the hours-and-minutes reading.
Enter times however your rota is written and the calculator reads both.
Change a time and the duration updates, with no submit step.
Type them in 24-hour or 12-hour format, whichever you prefer.
Enter unpaid break time in minutes and it is subtracted from the total.
The result is shown in hours and minutes and as decimal hours, which is what most payroll systems require.
If the end time is before the start time it assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours, so 22:00 to 06:00 correctly returns eight hours rather than a negative number.
Because pay is a rate multiplied by hours, and that only works with a decimal. Forty-five minutes is 0.75 hours, so 7 hours 45 minutes is entered as 7.75, not 7.45.
That depends on your employer and jurisdiction. This calculator deducts whatever you enter, so only enter breaks that are unpaid under your terms.
Use the work hours calculator for a full week of shifts with a running total. This one covers a single start and end pair.
