The Annuity Calculator computes the future value of a series of equal payments, handling both ordinary annuities that pay at the end of each period and annuities due that pay at the start, which are worth exactly one period of interest more.
An annuity in the financial sense is any series of equal payments made at regular intervals. Enter the payment, the rate, the frequency and the number of periods to get the future value, the total paid in and the growth those payments earned.
The distinction between an ordinary annuity and an annuity due is small in wording and real in money. An ordinary annuity pays at the end of each period; an annuity due pays at the start, so every payment earns one extra period of growth and the future value is higher by exactly one period of interest. Rent and insurance premiums are annuities due; loan payments and most savings contributions are ordinary. The calculator handles both and shows the gap between them.
End-of-period and start-of-period timing, with the difference between them shown.
Payment frequency and compounding frequency can differ, as they often do in practice.
The future value split into what you paid in and what the rate added.
The balance after every payment, so the compounding curve is visible rather than assumed.
From a few months to several decades, in years or periods.
The amount paid each period, and how often periods occur.
The annual rate and the number of years or periods the annuity runs for.
End of period for an ordinary annuity, start of period for an annuity due.
The final amount, split into what you paid in and what growth added.
Any series of equal payments at regular intervals. It covers savings contributions, loan repayments, rent and pension income, not only the insurance product that shares the name.
Timing. An ordinary annuity pays at the end of each period; an annuity due pays at the beginning. Because each payment earns one extra period of growth, an annuity due is worth exactly one period of interest more.
Payment multiplied by the quantity one plus the rate raised to the number of periods, minus one, divided by the rate. For an annuity due, multiply that whole result by one plus the rate.
Yes, though less than the rate or the term. More frequent compounding raises the effective return slightly, and the calculator lets you set payment and compounding frequency independently.
